Maile's B-day Taj Tune

I got Maile a Taj Tune for her bday. As hoped for, it caught her busy and off-gaurd. I love how she can’t contain her laughter.

“It’s Your Birthday”

Can I get a whoow? Whoow!
Superstar! Whoow!
Superstar! Whoow!
Hey, (Recipient’s Name)!
Hey hey hey hey!

Whoow! Whoow!
Superstar! Whoow!
Superstar! Whoow!
Hey, (Recipient’s Name)!
It’s your birthday!

Hair… Check!
Shoes… Check!
Shades… Check!
Hey! It’s your birthday!

Whoow! Whoow!
(Recipient’s Name), you look very good!
Whoow! Whoow!
You can be in Hollywood!
Whoow! Whoow!
You’re a king/queen for a day!
Coz hey! Hey hey hey hey!
It’s your birthday!

Oh you’re stylin’
Oh, oh you’re stylin’ (Woohoo!)
And you’re smilin’
Oh, oh you’re smilin’ (Woohoo!)
And you’re shinin’
Oh, oh you’re shinin’

Coz hey! Hey hey hey hey!
It’s your birthday! Whoow!

Avocado by Gary Snyder

The Dharma is like an Avocado!
Some parts so ripe you can’t believe it.
But it’s good.
And other parts hard and green
Without much flavor,
Pleasing those who like their eggs well-cooked.

And the skin is thin,
The great big round seed
In the middle,
Is your own Original Nature -
Pure and smooth,
Almost nobody ever splits it open
Or tries to see
If it will grow.

Hard and slippery,
It looks like
You should plant it – but then
It shoots out thru the
fingers -

gets away.

Dean's Forum Comic #2

McCombs held a follow-up Dean’s forum for the students to help them know what the economic crisis means for their job prospect. I drew another cartoon and we posted with the story.

Doug and Jonathan Afterparty Nirvana

So after everyone had gone on Sat. night, Michelle and Doug swung by and partied a little longer with Nate, Jonathan, and I. As we sat on the porch Doug and Jonathan began playing guitar together — for the first time, after having just met each other. Listen to the pure gold that came out of this chance meeting.

I put my stereo recorder on the table between them.

Concert In The Creek #2

We had a beautiful cool evening for lastnight’s concert in the creek by my house. Thomas sounded the sax, Gray drove the drums, Karla and Nate blended the backup. Thanks to all for coming! I’m doing another one real soon for the Austinites that didn’t make it.

Nate opened up with this one:

I wrote Bigger Animal after coming home from a walk and seeing a squirrel and thinking about shooting wolves from helicopters. I need to get it out there before the election; it gets political at the end.
Bigger Animal

With T-bone on sax, this one really sounds great. I need to record it with horns!
God Has Been Good To Me

Written in Mexico this summer, here’s a song in Spanish about being chill.
Mi Estillo Es Tranquilo

Written on the beach in Zihuatanejo, MX, where the saxophone coming from the cabana inspired this one. With Thomas on sax it felt good to sing the first line: “The saxophone sings on the sound of the sea…”
Un Momento Perfecto

P took these fantastic pics. Thanks P!

And Lib had some beauties too. Thanks Lib!

Next Concert In The Creek: This Saturday Oct 11

I’ll be putting on my second concert in the creek by my house this Saturday the 11th at sunset on Sunset Ln. The first one – this Spring – was a wonderful new experiment born from my frustration at playing way too many crappy gigs. After years of leading myself straight into many playing situations where my lyrics were drowned out and songs buried, playing over bad sound systems, no sound guy or bad sound guy, competing with noise of all sorts, in stinky, cramped, rushed situations…I got wise.

I created my own drudgery because I thought I had to, was supposed to, was paying my dues somehow and that I would someday rise up out of these shitty gigs if I just did enough of them. No more slavery to that fallacy! I realized that I was not doing myself or my fans any favors by facilitating these less-than-ideal venues and that my real job was to do it differently, my way, showcasing what I do in the best light, in the most enjoyable way possible for me and my listeners.

For years I’ve spied many wonderfully secret stages: natural little amphitheaters all around Austin, where I’ve often dreampt of setting up a gig. Usually these are open settings, by a creek or river, the bank or hillside wrapping around, where you can imagine a little play occurring in the most refreshing and intimate light.

There are many such stages around Austin where I would still like to play, but to begin with I realized I need look no further than right under my nose, to the creek across the street from my house, where I take my dog exploring most evenings, and often take my guitar to sit and play in the magic-hour light. In the last cool evenings of this past Spring, I held my first concert in the creek and it was a wonderfully fulfilling experience. See Javi’s pics above and below.

I’ll be refining my new formula again this Saturday. This time I won’t lead the group on the trek around Little Stacy Park to three separate spots; we’ll stick to the one that is easy and more mine, right beside my house, where we ended last time. Please come out and join us for the show and the after-party at my place. If you’d like more information, email me: j at jasonmolin dot net.

Deal of the Day

I had a great day walking around the Wimberley market and downtown with Maile, but the highlight was finding this board game, which I did not know existed, for $1! I love the New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest and now I can play it at home!!!

Below are a few pics from my market meanderings.

Comic Relief: Dean’s Forum Drawing

Our new dean at the McCombs School of Business led a panel discussion on the market meltdown. I took graphic notes (see above). Then we posted my rendering at McCombs TODAY, the news blog I just helped start. Then I got to give the dean my comic and he called me a “smart ass!” I was proud and delighted on so many levels!!!
